Programme overview
Training inside a working laboratory.
Our neuropathology programme places you at the bench of a professional, CQC-accredited diagnostic laboratory in Milton Keynes. Rather than classroom simulations, you learn by observing and practising the workflows, standards and expectations of a real laboratory environment.
Training is delivered as a Basic programme of 6 days or an Advanced programme of 12 days, on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Every participant completes the training with a CPD-accredited certificate.

Practical laboratory learning
From specimen to slide.
Training follows the real workflow of a diagnostic neuropathology laboratory — the complete bench-to-slide pathway, experienced under supervision in a working setting.
Individual techniques are experienced across both the Basic and Advanced programmes. Your individual training schedule and pathway will be discussed during your initial consultation.
- Stage 01
Specimen Reception
How neurological specimens arrive, are accessioned and prepared for their journey through the laboratory.
- Stage 02
Specimen Dissection, Assistance & Transfers
Supervised exposure to specimen dissection, assistance and the safe transfer of neural tissue between stations.
- Stage 03
Processing
How neural tissue is processed and readied for cutting — the quiet, exacting stage everything downstream depends on.
- Stage 04
Embedding
Orienting and embedding processed neural specimens in preparation for sectioning.
- Stage 05
Sectioning — Microtomy
Cutting thin, even sections of neural tissue on the microtome — one of neuropathology's defining hands-on skills.
- Stage 0635+ stains
Staining
Routine staining across the laboratory's range of 35+ stains, bringing neural structure into view.
- Stage 07
Special Staining
Specialised staining techniques used to highlight specific neural components and findings.
- Stage 08
Digital Microscopy
Examining sections at the bench and through the laboratory's digital microscopy workflow.
- Stage 09
Quality Control
The quality checks and professional standards that run through every stage of the pathway.
Who it's for
